This vast region, stretching from the Caspian Sea to China, consists of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, with Afghanistan and Iran below and mighty Russia looming to the north. The suffix ’stan is Persian and Urdu for ‘land of’.
